FUEL – Festival of New Zealand Theatre is an outstanding national arts event that showcases the ingenuity, inspiration and diversity of New Zealand theatre.
The inaugural 1998 program included thirty performances by twenty one companies including Krishnan’s Dairy by Indian Ink Theatre Company, the award-winning Lo ‘Omatua: The Ancient Mother by Lemi Ponifasio & Mau, Song to the Judges by Mervyn Thomson and William Dart, Jimmy Costello by Tim Balme, The Navigators by Red Mole Theatre Company, Michael James Manaia directed by Colin McColl an performed by Jim Moriarty and the theatre design exhibition, Fragments, commissioned for the Prague Biennale.
The Festival co-hosted the Australasian Drama Studies Conference – an international symposium on contemporary theatre featuring the work of Singaporean performance artist, Ray Langenbach.
